  • Peace, be still!

"And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.  And they woke Him and said to Him, 'Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?'  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be still!'  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, 'Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?'  And they feared exceedingly , and said to one another, 'Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!'"

                                     Mark 4: 37-41

I'm wondering how often God has to say to me, "Peace, be still!"

  • Learning To Trust and Obey

The song "Trust and Obey" has been on my mind recently.  I really like the line that says, "Trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."  It's really true!  When I'm relying on myself or just not doing what God wants me to do, I am not happy.
I was dreading going to my Chemistry lab today as I climbed the hill to Dutchess, because I just hate any kind of lab , and God gave me the verse, "If the Lord does not build the house, they labor in vain who build it."  (I forget where that is in the Bible)  God can get me through lab, even if we take the full three hours and its confusing, but my unrestful striving gains me nothing.  The key thing is to trust and obey Him.  And He got me through lab within two hours and I was able to understand it!  Praise the Lord!

  • Contacting People . . . ugh!

Well I have just tried to contact my professors for the fall semester concerning what books I need for my courses.  It goes like this: go to the Dutchess website, figure out how to find faculty email addresses, find my instructors' address, copy their email address, go to my email, paste their email address, construct a short, polite email, and send it   BUT there are drawbacks to this seemingly simple operation. . .
One of the professors doesn't think it important to have her email address on the Dutchess website, so we have to find the department assistant's phone number and call it, and find out that, "I am not in my office for the summer, I will return on August 24th."  So we find the department head's number and call it . . . no can do/ also unavailable.    So we find both of the aforesaid faculty members email addresses and send them an email asking them to send the instructor's email address (if they have it) to me so that I can email the professor to find out what books I will need for the class.
Yes, I love administrivia and all the delightful things that accompany it!  But God is good and I am glad that this part of preparation for going back to school is over!

  •      The topic for youth meeting of the life of David really ties in to what the Lord has been teaching me recently.  I've been reading and trying to memorize Psalm 18 which speaks a lot about the Lord being our strength.  1Samuel 17:47 says: "Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's and He will give you into our hands."  I am learning not to do things in my own strength.  It's a great blessing to commit things to God and bring them to Him acknowledging that it is through His strength that we get the victory.

  • Tax forms are confusing

I've been trying to apply to tutor Biology at DCC for the past week now.  I didn't think that it would take long - just talk to a few people in authority, sign a paper and you're hired.  But I found out that I had to go to an orientation; so I scheduled one for Wednesday which turned out to be a snow day (very nice!).  So I went for orientation today instead and they handed me a stack of papers and told me to fill out the tax form and one other form and hand them in to some Student and Career Employment Office that I knew nothing about and I'll have to get an orientation from that office as well.  So I looked at the forms and I cannot make head nor tail of that horrible tax form!  You go to the part where it says instructions and you think, "Oh good, it's gonna tell me what to fill out."  Nope, not really.  Their explanations are more confusing than the rest of the form.  Ah well,  I suppose I haven't filled out enough tax forms to understand them yet.  Practice, practice, practice.  Maybe sometime this semester I'll actually be able to tutor if I get past the forms and orientations.
